Questions to Ask Before Choosing Care
A practical checklist of the questions families should ask any care provider — about screening, supervision, costs, and what happens when plans change.
Choosing care for someone you love is a high-stakes decision usually made under time pressure. The right questions cut through marketing and reveal how a provider actually operates.
About the people
- How do you screen the people who provide care? Are background checks run before hire and repeated periodically?
- Will we have a consistent caregiver, or a rotation? What happens when our caregiver is sick or on vacation?
- How are caregivers trained, and is training ongoing?
- Can we meet or interview the caregiver before care begins?
About supervision and communication
- Who supervises care, and how often do they check in?
- How will we know what happened during each visit?
- Who do we call with a concern — and what are their hours?
- If something isn't working, how quickly can the caregiver be changed?
About costs
- What is the hourly or monthly rate, and what does it include?
- Is there a minimum number of hours per visit or per week?
- What costs extra — holidays, overnight care, transportation?
- Do you help families understand payment options, such as long-term care insurance or veterans' benefits?
About flexibility
- How much notice is needed to increase, reduce, or pause care?
- What happens if needs change — for example, if memory care becomes necessary?
- Is there a contract, and what does it take to end it?
Listen for how they answer
Clear, direct answers are themselves a signal. A quality provider welcomes these questions, answers them in writing when asked, and never pressures a family to sign the same day. Vague answers about screening, supervision, or pricing are reasons to keep looking.
Take notes, compare at least two options when time allows, and trust what you observe over what you're told.
